Glass Beads

What You Have to Know About Glass Beads

Glass beads have a long history. They are the one of the most popular and versatile styles of beads as they can be made in countless colors, sizes and shapes. From the bulk produced simple glass beads to personlally made lampwork beads, the followings are a few things you have to know about them.

History
People have been making glass beads since around 2340 B.C., and possibly actually earlier because beads from that period needed a good level of ability to create. Several experts think that Egyptians first created most of the methods often used right now to make glass beads, however as time passes the techniques were forgotten and discovered by some other cultures. Bead-making skills are believed to get extended from the Middle East towards the Mediterranean and beyond, in which enhanced skills were applied. For a while , Roman engaged Syria was the top site for making glass beads. Venice as well was an essential site of bead creating. In 1292, Italy’s glass manufacturing was relocated to Murano island, and both Murano and Venice continue to be significant Glass Bead making sites.

Styles
Apart from sizes and shapes, colors, there are a variety of distinctive kinds of glass beads. Such as Venetian, Or Murano beads, millefiori, lampwork, fused and furnace glass beads. Venetian or Venetian beads are hand-crafted mainly in Italy by using Moretti glass. Beads manufactured in many other places with similar methods aren’t authentic Venetian or Murano beads. Lampwork is a technique of making glass beads along with other things by using canes of glass and a tiny hand torch . Genuine lampwork beads are usually Hand Made, however, there are lots of manufacturers produced lampwork replicas. Millefiori are glass beads produced from rods of various tinted glass which were split to make a flower shaped style. Fused beads are produced by using a technique much like making stained glass, where small sheets of glass are fused collectively to create a bead. Furnace glass beads are created by soaking a mandrel into molten glass organized inside a furnace. The bead is formed then pushed off the mandrel.

Value
Glass beads offer significant insights to anthropologists and archaeologists learning historical cultures. Because the beads are usually stored when some other arts of times are already lost, they uncover details about technologies, buying and selling methods, art sorts and national diversities. Beads also are important in international economics. While lately as a century earlier, they were widely used just like money to exchange with products, supplies, foods as well as other goods. Several cultures created specific glass beads which were thought to secure the user.

Warning
When choosing glass beads, remember that a few beads which are made in huge amounts in developing countries could have higher amounts of lead. They can be also manufactured by child labor or in sweat shops, that makes it essential to figure out the place that the beads are produced by. All beads constructed with glass must also be correctly annealed in the kiln. Beads that aren’t annealed may crack quite easily.

Identification
It’s not too difficult to recognize good quality hand crafted glass beads from affordable bulk-made ones. The simplest ways to recognize a cheap bulk-made bead is to look into the hole. If it’s tough, incomplete or very irregular, it’s probably mass-produced. Also look at every corners cracks or joint parts. Hand-made high quality beads will probably be polished and finished fully on all edges and corners. At last, breaks or lines inside the glass are often merely seen in mass-produced beads. A great jewelry maker won’t offer a bead which has cracks or lines.
