Roman Empire
What are the differences between the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire?

PLEASE HELP!
I have to write an essay on this, I researched but barely found anything.
All i have is that the Roman Republic was run by and for the people and the Roman Empire was run by an emperor.
I NEED MORE PLZ HELPP!

The republic was run before the empire, in the US adaptations were used off the republic such as the senate and council after a while the republic became very corrupt and eventually was dissolved. After Julius ceasar took over the republic it turned into an empire, the mark of this was when julius was at the dividing river that he crossed to take over rome. This was the beginning of the end of rome. hope that helps

Cultural Identity in the Roman Empire

Cultural Identity in the Roman Empire

$39.7

This provocative and often controversial volume examines concepts of ethnicity, citizenship and nationhood, to determine what constituted cultural identity in the Roman Empire. The contributors draw together the most recent research and use diverse theoretical and methodological perspectives from archaeology, classical studies and ancient history to challenge our basic assumptions of Romanization and how parts of Europe became incorporated into a Roman culture. Cultural Identity in the Roman Empire breaks new ground, arguing that the idea of a unified and easily defined Roman culture is over-simplistic, and offering alternative theories and models. This well-documented and timely book presents cultural identity throughout the Roman empire as a complex and diverse issue, far removed from the previous notion of a dichotomy between the Roman invaders and the Barbarian conquered.

“This book is about the multiplicity of gods and religions that characterized the Roman world before Constantine. It was not the noble gods such as Jove, Apollo and Diana, who were crucial to the lives of the common people in the empire, bur gods of an altogether more earthly, earth level, whose rituals and observances may now seem bizarre. As well as being of wide general interest, this book will appeal to students of the Roman Empire and of the history of religion.”

"May Steven Saylor’s Roman empire never fall. A modern master of historical fiction, Saylor convincingly transports us into the ancient world…enthralling!" USA Today on Roma Continuing the saga begun in his New York Times bestselling novel Roma, Steven Saylor charts the destinies of the aristocratic Pinarius family, from the reign of Augustus to height of Rome’s empire. The Pinarii, generation after generation, are witness to greatest empire in the ancient world and of the emperors that ruled it from the machinations of Tiberius and the madness of Caligula, to the decadence of Nero and the golden age of Trajan and Hadrian and more. Empire is filled with the dramatic, defining moments of the age, including the Great Fire, the persecution of the Christians, and the astounding opening games of the Colosseum. But at the novel’s heart are the choices and temptations faced by each generation of the Pinarii. Steven Saylor once again brings the ancient world to vivid life in a novel that tells the story of a city and a people that has endured in the world’s imagination like no other.

In this engaging study, Michael Grant presents some of the most outstanding manifestations of art from all over the enormous territory which was the Roman empire. He has selected items which particularly represent the special achievements and functions of art in the empire. Architecture and portraiture, at which the Romans excelled, are discussed in detail. Michael Grant examines paintings at Pompeii and Herculaneum. He also surveys some of the most significant examples of mosaic, jewellery and silverware. There is an assessment of Greek, Etruscan and purely Roman elements in the construction and style of the art of the empire. This lucid survey encompasses all regions of the empire and shows how much of its artistic work was actually done outside Rome and Italy. It seems certain that a great number of important pieces were produced by people who were not Romans or Italians, though Rome was the powerhouse which instigated their work. "Art in the Roman Empire" is fully illustrated with detailed captions. It is compelling reading for all those who are interested in the history of the Roman empire, or in the development of art and architecture.

The Roman Empire: Roots of Imperialism

The Roman Empire: Roots of Imperialism

$30.07

A millennium and a half after the end of the period of its unquestioned dominance, Rome remains a significant presence in western culture. This book explores what the empire meant to its subjects. The idea of Rome has long outlived the physical empire that gave it form, and now holds sway over vastly more people and a far greater geographical area than the Romans ever ruled. It continues to shape our understanding of the nature of imperialism, and thus, however subtly, to influence the workings of the world. Unlike most works on Roman history, this book does not offer a simplistic narrative, with military triumph followed by decline and fall. Instead, it analyzes the origins and nature of Roman imperialism, its economic, social and cultural impact on the regions it conquered, and its continuing influence in discussions and debates about modern imperialism. Exquisitely written, this book is perfect for students of classics and ancient history who want to see another side of the Roman empire.

The Later Roman Empire

Marked by the shift of power from Rome to Constantinople and the Christianization of the Empire, this pivotal era requires a narrative and interpretative history of its own. Averil Cameron, an authority on later Roman and early Byzantine history and culture, captures the vigor and variety of the fourth century, doing full justice to the enormous explosion of recent scholarship. After a hundred years of political turmoil, civil war, and invasion, the Roman Empire that Diocletian inherited in AD 284 desperately needed the radical restructuring he gave its government and defenses. His successor, Constantine, continued the revolution by adopting–for himself and the Empire–a vibrant new religion: Christianity. The fourth century is an era of wide cultural diversity, represented by figures as different as Julian the Apostate and St. Augustine. Cameron provides a vivid narrative of its events and explores central questions about the economy, social structure, urban life, and cultural multiplicity of the extended empire. Examining the transformation of the Roman world into a Christian culture, she takes note of the competition between Christianity and Neoplatonism. And she paints a lively picture of the new imperial city of Constantinople. By combining literary, artistic, and archaeological evidence. Cameron has produced an exciting record of social change. "The Later Roman Empire" is a compelling guide for anyone interested in the cultural development of late antiquity.
